Pune, A prolonged debate surrounding the assertion of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb has been ongoing recently.

Evidently, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray has appealed to the public to use their judgment about the alleged stories we see on WhatsApp.

The comments were made in Maharashtra at a time when communal tensions are rising. Aong with political clashes in reference to history when looking back to Aurangzeb.

History of the Aurangzeb Issue

The controversy intensified after several events brought Aurangzeb’s historical perspective back to the public attention.

Supposedly, in May 2022, AIMIM member Akbaruddin Owaisi visited Aurangzeb’s tomb and prayed. Afterwards, various Hindu political parties, including the BJP, Shiv Sena, and MNS, expressed outrage.

Allegedly, the outrage criticized the glorification of someone who invaded in that 17th century. Henceforth, started conversions and conflict over religions.

Raj Thackeray’s Message

Subsequently, the debate around the issues increased. Raj Thackeray pointed to using history sources you can trust instead of cooking information you see from anywhere on social media.

Consequently, he then cautioned that the more we dive into fabricated stories, the more it chases undue communal division. Especially, in a time of greater issues to be mindful of.

Political Response and Occurrences

As a matter of fact, Raj Thackeray’s comments fit into a broader approach to political discourse in Maharashtra.

Strangely, during his 55th birthday celebration, Raj Thackeray cut a cake with the image of Aurangzeb on it.

Additionally, there was a loudspeaker, which was telling about his attitude towards the Mughal emperor’s legacy.

Moreover, how he interpreted the current loudspeaker position.

It was widely acknowledged as a protest against the glorification of historical figures deemed oppressors.

In addition, the loudspeaker issue has populated the political landscape for some time in Maharashtra.

Raj Thackeray had issued an ultimatum in May 2022 demanding the removal of loudspeakers at mosques by May 3.

Henceforth, meriting that if not done he would amplify the reading of Hanuman Chalisa. This situation was regarded with heightened caution.

Consequently, they had imposed Section 144 regulations in Aurangabad ahead of his rally.

Demand for Historical Accuracy

Raj Thackeray’s demand provides a prime example of needing historical accuracy and responsible interpretation.

Subsequently, he encouraged the public to interact with well-documented historical texts/copyrights provided by scholars.

Additionally, a critical viewpoint on narratives that were potentially politically motivated, and/or lacked scholarly drives.

Therefore, this encouragement shows a desire to provide an educated way of arguing.

Moreover, to reduce the use of historical events as platforms for current political experimentations.
