At approximately 3:15 a.m., the driver drove the truck around barricades onto Canal Street and into the crosswalk on Bourbon Street with a phalanx of pedestrians. After the crash, the attacker got out of the vehicle and opened fire with an assault rifle, injuring two police officers, before being fatally shot by authorities.
The two injured officers are resting in a stable condition. A homemade explosive device was found set in the truck, but its potential capacity is under evaluation.

Witnesses described scenes of carnage and terror. Jimmy Cothran, watching from a nearby nightclub balcony, described seeing several dead bodies, including a woman’s mangled torso and a man in tire tracks.
