Tense in Sambhal: Internet Shut, Security Tightened After Mosque Survey Sparks Unrest

Sambhal district in Uttar Pradesh is still under heavy security following the violence over a disputed incident.Suspected on some occasion, peace was only restored for Friday congregational prayers with hundreds of police.

However, because of that tension one area was put under complete curfew for fear of clashes escalating.

The violence broke out when communal tensions had flared last week over a local dispute which had supposedly become associated with a survey of a mosque.

Peace was restored on Friday under heavy police deployment during community prayers.

Still, the region experiences tension, leading to certain areas being put under strict curfew to avoid repeated acts of violence.

Internet Services halted for Misinformation Control

The most common measure taken in place has been suspension of internet services with the notion of restricting provocative content on social sites.

This measure was extended in order to prevent communal unrest from increasing further due to false reports or incitements.

Political Leaders Take their Stance

Akhilesh Yadav of the Samajwadi Party, along with other political leaders, said the ruling party did not responsibly handle the situation.

He questioned, yet again, why it was necessary to survey the mosque again. He went on to explain how several locals were injured in the fray.

Still, the government was adamant that the measures were deeply felt to restore law and order.

Challenges to Residents under Curfew

While the measures have seemingly contained further violence, the prolonged curfew and internet suspension have worsened issues for residents.

Daily life has been disrupted amidst the curtailing of businesses and essential services. Local authorities promised restrictions will be relaxed slowly after the situation has stabilized.

The district administration and police have been looking for cooperation among the local population, especially during these sensitive times.

Peace committees with members from various communities have commenced work to foster dialogue and understanding.

Status Report and Outlook

Presently, Sambhal remains under keen vigil, and additional police have been deployed in different parts of the district.

As of now, there have been no new incidents reported, and deployment is a preemptive measure.

The authorities emphasize that these measures are transitory, in order to maintain the safety of all the citizens.
