Sri Lankan President Vows to Safeguard India’s Security: A Promise to PM Modi

In a notable diplomatic gesture, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that no action will take place on Sri Lankan soil that could threaten India’s security.

The meeting of Wickremesinghe with Modi on the sidelines of the Voice of the Global South Summit reaffirmed the close bilateral ties between the two nations.

Key Highlights of the Meeting

President Wickremesinghe stressed Sri Lanka’s commitment to remaining firmly allied with India on security cooperation grounds.

They discussed enhancing regional security and stability by countering coordinated threats including terrorism, drug trafficking, and organized crime.

The talks also covered ongoing cooperation in Sri Lanka on defense-related activities with India.

India is also assisting the Sri Lankan Navy in augmenting its maritime capabilities to ensure the Indian Ocean region is protected from any threats.

Building Partnerships for Economics and Infrastructure

The talks focused not only on security but economic cooperation as well. India continues to remain among the largest trading partners for Sri Lanka, and the two leaders reviewed the existing trade agreement, including looking for new investment and investment transfer opportunities.

In another notable development this year, India announced a $4 billion economic aid package to Sri Lanka to help the island nation deal with its ongoing economic crisis.

The economic aid package will be extended to infrastructure funding, energy cooperation, and the tourism sector.

Issues Raised in Current Controversies

This meeting comes amid allegations of the Chinese influence on Sri Lanka. India has concerns over the Chinese presence in the Indian Ocean, such as investments in Sri Lanka’s strategic ports.

But Wickremesinghe assured Modi that it is Sri Lanka’s policy to maintain a neutral course that will benefit regional peace.

The two leaders discussed a sensitive issue involving Tamil reconciliation in Sri Lanka.

Modi reiterated India’s long-standing commitment to justice and fair treatment to the Tamil community in Sri Lanka’s Northern and Eastern Provinces, urging Colombo to press on with its political reforms.

Growing Marine Surveillance

As maritime challenges are keenly felt, both countries are enhancing surveillance efforts.

India’s recent support to Sri Lanka includes the provision of patrol vessels, radar equipment, and the engagement of its navy personnel in technical training for operational arms against smuggling and illegal fishing.

The Way Forward

Enhanced ties between India and Sri Lanka reinstate the value of strategic partnerships across the South Asian region.

This pledge of mutual security, economic collaboration, and intellectual exchange seeks to re-establish a common vision toward stability and development in this region.

The revival of these ties also sets the stage for Sri Lanka to act as a linchpin in India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy, designed to promote close contacts with other South Asian nations.
