In a startling turn of events, a protest against the Waqf Act in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district turned violent on Friday, culminating in the vandalism of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abu Taher Khan’s office in Domkal. The incident has amplified public dissatisfaction surrounding Waqf land policies and raised concerns about law and order in the region.
Protest Escalates in Domkal Over Waqf Property Disputes
The demonstration began with local residents, clerics, and landowners gathering peacefully to express their frustration over what they describe as a lack of transparency in the Waqf Act’s implementation. Protestors argue that the law has caused widespread confusion regarding ownership of private and community land registered under the Waqf Board.
However, tensions escalated rapidly when the protestors reached MP Abu Taher Khan’s constituency office. The situation spiraled out of control, with the mob ransacking the premises, damaging property, and scattering documents.
TMC MP’s Office Targeted in Angry Outburst
Eyewitnesses reported that the crowd forcibly entered the office, smashing windows, pulling down banners, and causing significant property damage. Staffers present at the time escaped without injuries, but described the event as “terrifying” and “completely unexpected.”
The MP was not present at the time of the attack.
Security Forces Mobilized; Investigations Underway
Local police were deployed to control the situation and have since registered a First Information Report (FIR). Law enforcement confirmed that surveillance footage has helped identify several individuals involved in the act of vandalism. Some suspects have already been detained.
A senior officer from Murshidabad Police stated:
“This was an unlawful assembly that led to criminal damage. Appropriate legal action is being taken.”
TMC Condemns Violence, Calls for Dialogue
Reacting to the incident, TMC MP Abu Taher Khan expressed shock and condemned the violent outburst.
“People have a right to raise their voices, but violence cannot be the medium,” he said.
TMC leadership echoed this sentiment, urging the public to engage through dialogue and promising to listen to community concerns around the Waqf property laws.
Waqf Law Controversy Sparks Public Unrest
The Waqf law, which governs religious endowments in India, has become a flashpoint in several parts of the country. Protestors in Murshidabad allege that local authorities are forcefully taking over lands under the guise of Waqf registration, often without proper documentation or consent.
Legal experts argue that better awareness and reform are essential to prevent further conflict over religious trust lands and individual property rights.
Situation Under Control, but Tensions Simmer
As of Saturday morning, calm has been restored in the area, with heavy police presence still in place. Authorities are in touch with community leaders to prevent further escalation and plan to hold a public hearing to address grievances around the Waqf land issues.
