Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting in New Delhi to discuss the recent clashes in Manipur.
The minister directed the intensification of the efforts to establish peace and talks, which are expected to stabilize the situation.
Prominent Ministry of Home Affairs officials, including Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla, attended the meeting and were provided with the latest information regarding violence in Manipur.
Violence in Manipur

The state of Manipur has been witnessing sporadic violence since May 2023, when ethnic tensions between the Meitei and Kuki communities reached alarming levels.
New scuffles have since turned violent, leaving many people dead and injured.
This tension is a backdrop for another intervention by Amit Shah, with the government striving to stave off the escalation of violence and restore law and order.
In the wake of the new proliferation of violence, Shah reiterated his obligation to restore a semblance of peace in the region.
The minister urged the security forces to exercise a high degree of restraint while handling protests to de-escalate confrontations.
The Home Minister said tranquility calls for a sustained dialogue among the groups in conflict, requesting that local leaders and civil society work to initiate talks and establish peace.
Government Initiatives and Peace Measures
The government has been bringing in additional security forces to respond and patrol sensitive areas further, setting up a special task force to redress the communities’ complaints, and establishing a frontline to provide relief to the affected.
Moreover, the government has on record the assurance to provide rehabilitation to the essential services affected by the riot, including communication networks that are crippled towards delaying the dissemination of misinformation.
Shah visited Manipur for the first time in June 2023 and worked from the beginning to engage local communities and gain firsthand knowledge of the reality on the ground.
He visited Manipur to promote reconciliation among the opposing factions and consistently urged the Ministry of Home Affairs to open dialogue and mediate peace talks between community leaders.
The situation continues to be tense due to the fragility of the conflict’s impact on the lives of the communities in Manipur; constant vigilance on the part of the central government can stabilize the situation.
Continued Political Engagement
Biren Singh, Chief Minister of Manipur, and other state leaders have continued negotiating and engaging in discussions with components of the state to devise conflict resolution programs.
Singh called for more support from the Union government, primarily by deploying more central forces.
In contrast, opposition parties also called on the central government to take a comprehensive approach, considering first the root causes of the conflict and enabling solutions over the long term.
The few more unstable features of the state have led to a decline in the local economy and the evacuation of thousands from their homes, who have taken refuge in relief camps.
NGOs and local groups were helping alongside the government agencies providing humanitarian aid, but the situation remains tense, with fears of renewed violence persisting.
Future Perspectives and the Government Scheme
The Ministry of Home Affairs still focuses on multiple-layered plans to help restore peace in Manipur.
This will include dialogue, specific security measures, and economic rehabilitation of the concerned communities.
The directives given to Amit Shah also included increasing communication between the government at the center and that in the state to avert sinister developments.
The central government has pledged to restore peace to prevent another bloodshed and settle the region.
