Erattupetta, Kerala – Police in Erattupetta have booked P.C. George, a veteran BJP leader in Kerala, for remarks allegedly capable of inciting religious hatred.
The complaint was filed with the police by the Muslim Youth League Municipal Committee, which alleged that George had been airing hate speeches against a minority community during a television discussion earlier in the week.
Among the controversies surrounding the case was George’s television interview, where he allegedly made some remarks that were derogatory to a specific religious community. The police started investigations following the formal complaint lodged by the Muslim Youth League, which is the youth organization of the IUML.
Subsequently, a First Information Report was lodged against George under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion.
Reactions from the Parties
The BJP is condemning this police action as being politically motivated and orchestrated by the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala. Party spokespersons argue that the charges against George are baseless and meant to suppress dissent voices.
They furthered that George’s comments had been twisted out of context and that he was merely exercising his right to free speech.
Conversely, the LDF and the leaders from the United Democratic Front (UDF) defended legal action, stating that it was proper to curb hate speech and maintain communal harmony in the state. They opine that inflammatory remarks, especially from persons in power, can disrupt peace and must be immediately checked on.
George’s Statement of Defense
P.C. George defended his statements while stating that his remarks were aimed at extremist ideologies rather than at any specific community. He said he was portraying issues of religious extremism where his words were misinterpreted as serving political ends. George, known for being outspoken, has a history of provocation; his slanderous remarks have drawn both praise and condemnation.
Legal Actions

The Erattupetta police have begun investigating the allegations. If he is found guilty, George could face the penalties of a fine and even imprisonment as provided by the IPC in connection with his hate speech in promoting enmity between communities.
As assured, police shall not take any bias into consideration while executing the investigation.
Public Reactions
Reactions have poured in, both in real life and especially on social media. While some support George’s right to express his views, others decry his utterances as disturbing and injurious to Kerala’s secular fabric. The people of the state, known for their religious diversity and communal harmony, are sensitive to anything that is deemed to threaten social concord.
Hate Speech Context in India
This incident is part of a larger national discourse on hate speech and freedom of expression. In recent years, increasing complaints of hate speech by political leaders throughout India have sparked legal cases and public outrage. The Indian Constitution provides freedom of speech; however, it imposes reasonable restrictions to safe-guard it from any speech to cause public disorder, decency, or morality.
The booking of P.C. George for alleged hate speech underpins the ongoing struggle between freedom of expression and the need to sustain communal peace in India.
