India Launches ‘Operation Brahma’ to Aid Myanmar After Earthquake

India has initiated ‘Operation Brahma’ to provide humanitarian assistance to Myanmar following a significant earthquake that struck the country on March 28, 2025. 

Significantly, the operation highlights India’s commitment to assisting its neighbors during times of crisis. 

Immediate Assistance and Relief 

Following the earthquake, India immediately dispatched approximately 15 tonnes of aid by sending a C-130J military transport aircraft. Sent to Yangon to deliver the clearance materials, which included tents, sleeping bags, blankets, ready meals, water purifiers, solar lamps, generator sets, and essential medicines, which addressed the Myanmar population’s immediate needs. 

Evidently, India has deployed an 80-member NDRF team to help support the search and rescue operation. Henceforth, NDRF team members are trained disaster response specialists who will work with local authorities to provide immediate assistance. 

Medical Support and Deployment of Field Hospital 

Additionally, India sent a specialized medical task force to provide critical medical support for urgent traumatic medical care. This includes surgical treatment. A 60-bed Medical Treatment Centre has been established to offer healthcare services for the injured.

Naval Assistance and Additional Support

In the face of the devastation caused by Cyclone Mocha, India sent two naval vessels with additional support for Myanmar, adding to its relief response. These vessels can assist with relief operations and logistical support.  

Subsequently, the fact that India is deploying naval capabilities demonstrates its holistic approach to disaster response.

Diplomatic Engagement

Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke directly with Myanmar’s Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. Apparently, he expressed India’s condolences and solidarity and extended an offer for support to the people of Myanmar. 

Such a high-level engagement reflects the enduring relationship between the two nations and India’s willingness to assist Myanmar in this difficult time.

Multiple international organizations have acknowledged India’s proactive and leading role in disaster relief. The United Nations praised India’s expeditious response and commented on the efficiency in providing humanitarian assistance. 

As a matter of fact, neighboring countries, especially Thailand and Bangladesh, have also expressed solidarity with Myanmar. 

India will consider additional relief consignments based on evolving needs. More medical teams and engineering units may also be sent to assist with rehabilitation. Authorities are watching closely to ensure a continued response is sustained.
