Cyclone Fengal Wreaks Havoc: Chennai Airport Shut, Schools Closed, and Evacuations Underway

Cyclone Fengal, a very severe cyclonic storm that formed over the Bay of Bengal, is set to make landfall by tonight near Puducherry and the Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu. With wind speeds projected to be between 85 km/h and 100 km/h, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has classified it as posing a grave threat.

The storm is already causing heavy rains and power outages throughout Tamil Nadu, with its effects extending into Puducherry and other areas.

Chennai Airport Closed, Flights Suspended

Chennai International Airport has been closed temporarily due to deteriorating weather conditions. IndiGo and other airlines have canceled their flights, leaving passengers stranded. Passengers are advised to check their flight status with their airlines, and airlines are expected to replenish their value for safety purposes as the cyclone continues its advance.

Schools and Colleges Shut

In view of the cyclone alert, schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and some other districts have been declared closed. The Tamil Nadu government has issued instructions to all educational institutions to ensure student safety and assume preparedness for emergencies. All examinations scheduled for this week have also been postponed.

Rain and Flooding Alert

Moderate to heavy rains due to the cyclone Fengal have been reported, causing severe waterlogging in Chennai and coastal regions. Based on the statement made by IMD, the anticipated rainfall intensity will increase; some districts have chances of above 20 cm rainfall in a day.

Red alert has been issued for Chennai, Nagapattinam, and Cuddalore, entreating the people to be cautious about any kind of flooding and landslides.

Relief operations and evacuations

Many teams associated with the National Disaster Response Force have been mobilized towards the relief operations to assist. The coastal populace, especially those residing in low-lying areas, has been evacuated to safer areas.

The state administration is on high alert to cooperate towards the mitigation of the storm’s effects and to ensure an expeditious response towards emergencies. Fishermen have been prominently warned against venturing into the seas.

Public advisory

It is suggested that the people prepare themselves for the arrival of the cyclone by stockpiling all necessary supplies, avoiding nonessential travel, and strengthening houses.

Emergency helplines have been activated in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Andhra Pradesh. The civic bodies in Chennai are on alert to eliminate waterlogging and clear drainage systems as fast as they can.

Power Outages and Damage Reports

Reports from across several parts of Tamil Nadu tell a story of power outages and damage to the infrastructure as Cyclone Fengal batters its way inland. Workers are in the field trying to restore power to areas affected, beginning with hospitals and emergency shelters.

Downed trees and damaged roads have interrupted transport, making life even more difficult for those affected.

Impact on Coastal Communities

Fishing communities all along the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coastline now seem more vulnerable. Many have been moved to temporary shelters where food, water, and medical supplies are available. Officials have warned of high tidal waves and possible further erosion of the sea along the coast, urging people to exercise extreme caution.
