In advance of Coldplay’s upcoming concerts scheduled in Mumbai for January 2025 prices of hotels are nearing a whopping ₹5 lakh for three nights in accommodations close to the bands venues. Since the British band is extremely popular across India, and in addition to the international demand, there is a tremendous demand for hotels.
As part of the band’s “Music of the Spheres World Tour,” on January 18 and 19 there will be two concerts at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, and due to a great deal of demand a third concert is scheduled for January 21. Because of the concerts and interest the price of hotels in the immediate vicinity have skyrocketed in anticipation of the concerts.
For example, the entire premium hotels in Navi Mumbai have been sold out for the event dates. The Fortune Select Exotica in Vashi for three guests between January 17-19 has a price close to ₹2.45 lakh for three nights. the Fern Residency is close to that price at nearly ₹2 lakh for two guests over the same date.
The increase is not confined to the city of Navi Mumbai. Hotels located even further afield, such as Taj Lands End in Bandra, have also raised their rates, with one room for two costing over ₹34,000 for January 17. This is a significant increase in rate considering the typical underlying rates of about ₹32,000 (or thereabouts) when demand spikes for peak events like New Year’s Eve .
The increase in rates can be attributed largely to the demand for Coldplay concert tickets, which were sold out almost immediately after tickets went on sale. The band’s first performance back in India since they performed at the Global Citizen Festival in 2016, has fans planning their travels, which has ramped up the race for available hotel accommodations.
With so many hotels already booked out, concert attendees, if they wish to go to the concert, are left with limited options, and the options that still exist are exorbitant. Some people are even speculating if it may be cheaper to go to another country to attend the concert, then to stay in Mumbai during the potential booking dates.
The significant rise in hotel prices demonstrates the economic effects on the local area by hosting these large-scale entertainment events. The hospitality industry in Mumbai has seen a dramatic increase in demand, and even mid-tier hotels are increasing their prices. For example, the Regenza by Tunga in Vashi, is now quoting ₹4.45 lakh for a three-night stay, instead of its regular booking fee of ₹7,000-₹30,000 per night. Overall, while the hotel industry is benefiting, the related transportation and tourism sectors are experiencing a boost in revenue as well, indicating a wider economic increase across the city due to the effects of Coldplay’s concert series.
