BJP Ends AAP’s Decade-Long Reign in Delhi with Historic Win

BJP Lift Majority in Delhi Assembly After 27 Years

In a landmark political shift, the Bhartiya Janata Party has seized a conclusive victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, reclaiming power in the national capital after having been absent for nearly 27 years. The party scored 48 assembly seats out of 70, bringing to a closure Aam Aadmi Party’s governance for a decade.

Election Results

The BJP win means huge gains with a sharp increase, going from just 8 Seats in 2020. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, has seen a considerable drop from 62 with which it started, winning just 22 seats.

The Congress party has continued to witness an embarrassing downward slide for the third consecutive term, not securing a single seat.

Major Contests and Key Upsets

With some high-profile constituencies seeing nail-biting contests:

New Delhi Constituency: BJP’s Parvesh Verma stunned AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal by defeating him by just over 4,089 votes, thus succeeding in a very significant upset for the former Chief Minister.

Kalkaji Constituency: In a tight space, the AAP’s Atishi Marlena managed to retain her seat, defeating Ramesh Bidhuri of the BJP by around 3,500 votes.

Jangpura Constituency: Former Deputy Chief Minister AAP’s Manish Sisodia conceded defeat to Tarvinder Singh Marwah of the BJP after acknowledging a loss of 600 votes.

Reasons for BJP’s Rescue

BJP’s resurgence is attributed to a combination of several reasons by analysts:

Efficient Campaigning: Promises made by BJP over strategies to bring monetary assistance to oppressed classes flourished in the minds of many voters, ranging from a monthly payment to women in poverty to subsidies on essential goods and services.

Leaders’ Appeal: The cause for increased public confidence in the party’s vision for Delhi is due to its Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal intervention along with the government’s focus on governance and development.

Challenges for the AAP: The AAP suffered heavy blows with widespread corruption charges against its leadership, including the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal on graft charges, prior to the elections.

Kejriwal, although released on bail, caused a referendum of clay to leave a dent in the party image.

Statements of Political Leaders

Following the results, Arvind Kejriwal conceded defeat and extended congratulations to the BJP.

In a video statement, he said, “We accept the mandate of the people with great humility. We have done a lot of work in health, education, and infrastructure over the last 10 years. We shall not only be constructive opposition but will remain among the people and continue serving them.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi thanked the voters and stated, “Development and good governance has triumphed. I bow to my dear brothers and sisters of Delhi for this resounding mandate. We are humbled and honored to receive these blessings.”

Some Provisions of the Election Results

The BJP’s victory in Delhi is of great import, for it not only brings it back to power after almost three decades but also has the power to influence national politics.

Such victory augments the BJP’s standing in India with respect to the upper house of parliament, and therefore increases its legislative grip. Being in command of the capital would give the BJP stronger leverage over administrative and policy matters in Delhi.

A Power Shift Popularly Understood

The BJP is now faced with the task of reconstituting the government in Delhi and putting into action the promised rays of hope regarding education, health care, and infrastructure development.

The AAP, in opposition, pledges to continue serving the public and provide checks on the government. The political dynamics in Delhi are about to witness an entire shift during the tenure of the new administration.
