The riots broke out as protestors condemned the arrest of Chinmoy Das, allegedly for defaming Islam via certain posts on social media.

Background and Arrest Details

Following accusations of blasphemy against him by a local businessman, Osman Ali, Das, a leader in the ISKCON community, was arrested, which sparked outrage in the rest of Bangladesh’s Hindu minority.

Reservations grew further when inflammatory calls by Islamist groups, including Hefazat-e-Islam, demanded a ban on ISKCON activities and branded them as “extremist.”

Violence in Chattogram

Local and international Hindu organizations condemned the happenings, underscoring the need to ensure religious liberties and minority protection.

This unrest brings to the fore the precarious situation of religious minorities in Bangladesh, clamoring for sustained efforts to ensure inclusivity and reduce rising communal tensions.

With investigations in process, the government is under increasing pressure to deliver justice and restore public faith.

Human rights organizations have condemned the violence, urging Bangladesh to uphold its secular ethos. Global Hindu groups have called for increased accountability and safety measures for the minorities.
