Atishi to Lead Delhi: Kejriwal Resigns Amid Scandal, AAP Eyes Fresh Elections

In a major political shift, Atishi Marlena has been named the next Chief Minister of Delhi, becoming a successor of Arvind Kejriwal, who recently resigned from the designation amid controversies surrounding the Delhi excise policy. Kejriwal, who got out of prison securing bail, made the declaration during a legislative meeting, where his proposal to nominate Atishi was unanimously supported by AAP MLAs.

Atishi, an education reform advocate and Rhodes scholar, has long been a key figure within the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). She has significantly established her reputation by transforming Delhi’s public education system, serving as an MLA from Kalkaji and handling key portfolios in Kejriwal’s cabinet. Her rise to prominence quickened after Kejriwal’s arrest, as she got onboard handling major governance responsibilities during his absence. Her efficient management duties further solidified her position as the frontrunner for the chief minister role.

The chain of events that led to her nomination began with Kejriwal’s release from Tihar Jail on September 13, 2024. After his release, he declared his resignation, expressing a desire to clear his name and seek a fresh mandate from the people of Delhi. He proposed early elections in November 2024, moving the schedule up from February 2025, in an attempt to restore public trust and depict his commitment to the party and his responsibilities.

Atishi’s nomination is a turning point for AAP, as the party confronts multiple challenges, including accusations against its leadership and a revitalised opposition. Kejriwal’s decision or stepping down was met with scrutiny and criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who characterised it a “PR stunt” intending to divert attention from corruption charges.

“I’m extremely grateful to Kejriwal who put his trust in me” said Atishi expressing her gratitude towards Arwind Kejriwal and the AAP Party. She highlighted her intention to continue the party’s work in enhancing governance and public welfare in Delhi, especially focusing on education reforms. Atishi recognized the challenges that lie ahead, especially with the approaching elections, but expressed confidence in guiding the AAP into the future. She urged both party members and the citizens of Delhi to come together and support one another to navigate this crucial period.

Atishi’s rise to the post is expected to rejuvenate AAP’s image while putting her leadership to the test. For now, it remains a question if she succeeds in maintaining the party’s dominance in Delhi and countering the opposition’s narrative remains to be seen. Her swearing-in is expected after formal procedures, including securing a majority in the Delhi Assembly.
