While addressing a rally in Jharkhand, Modi publicly criticized the JMM-Congress alliance for adversely altering the Other Backward Classes (OBC) alliance for party politics. He appealed to strengthen the BJP’s position in the region, urging voters to unite for their safety and prosperity before the impending Lok Sabha elections.
Accusations Against the Opposition
He accused the JMM and the Congress of propping up ill-intentioned divisions among the OBC people. Besides this, he accused the opposition parties of trying to break the OBC vote bank in the traditional electoral base.
Modi framed this unfolding political scene around a war between the divisive elements and general perceptions against the BJP which, he claimed, stood for unification. Modi’s phrase, “Ek rahoge to safe rahoge,” only emphasized community support, recognizing that the strength of unity can fend off opposition exploitation.
Focus on National Security and Illegal Immigration
Modi talked of national security, especially in border areas such as Jharkhand. He accused JMM of siding with illegal immigrants including Bangladeshis and Rohingyas who he said will eventually affect the socio-political stability of the region.
His rhetoric was to draw a line between this and the opposition’s lack of interest in fighting illegal immigration.
Returning to the locus of development, Modi directed conversations to state-run intervention measures aimed at OBCs, including reservation and welfare schemes. His administration had consistently worked toward summoning backward communities for rescue in the domain of education, financial support, and skill development programs.

He assured voters of support for OBC welfare from the BJP and pointed fingers at the opposition for sidetracking the OBC from mainframe development for decades, denying them support, with the only exception being election time.
The Jharkhand rally fits into Modi’s larger strategy of consolidating the OBC vote bank, which will be extremely decisive in the upcoming elections. Since the JMM-Congress alliance attempts to widen its appeal across the state, Modi’s overtures towards OBCs are meant to help create a balance against opposition inroads.
The emphasis on UMM represents Modi’s outreach to backward classes, hoping to rally voters behind the BJP as its guardian.
Election Strategy and Voter Appeal
As they prepare for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Jharkhand has become a center of focus for both the BJP and the opposition. This state, which has a significant tribal and OBC population, will be the main battlefield.
The JMM, in coalition with the Congress, currently holds power in the state and emphasizes local issues such as tribal rights and economic development.
However, Modi’s direct call to OBC voters and attacks on the governance of the JMM are oriented at appealing to undecided voters by offering the BJP as a potential alternative in confronting long-standing grievances.
Modi’s rally showcased his twin-natured focus on matters of national security and unity among backward classes, aimed at giving robustness to the BJP’s voter base in Jharkhand.
The coming elections are being strongly contested with aggressive campaigning as both the BJP and the JMM-Congress alliance will be vying to seek support from the OBC and tribal communities, who are the determining factor in the electoral outcome in this region.
