Devendra Fadnavis, the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, attributed the recent wave of public anger against the Mughal emperor, Aurangzeb, to the movie ‘Chhaava.’ Fadnavis commented on the violent clashes that took place in Nagpur.
While speaking in the state legislative assembly, he noted the movie’s influence, which sparked public outrage.
Influence of Film on Public Sentiments
‘Chhaava,’ featuring Vicky Kaushal, is a biopic that stars Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The biopic describes the historical conflicts between the Maratha Empire and Aurangzeb’s forces, which are part of the Mughal Empire.
Fadnavis claimed that the representations in the movie had heightened the negative image of Aurangzeb in the public consciousness. He remarked, “Chhaava movie has fueled people’s anger against Aurangzeb, but everyone should keep Maharashtra calm.
Violence Erupts in Nagpur
On Monday, unrest erupted in Nagpur after protesters demanded the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. Violence in Nagpur intensified after it was rumored that a right-wing group had burned a religious book.
This aggravated the situation, and violence erupted, resulting in vandalism to houses and vehicles. A curfew was declared in parts of Nagpur city to restore public calm.
Injuries and Official Reaction
Injuries occurred to civilians and police officers during and after violence in Nagpur. Fadnavis said that 33 police officers were injured, including three officers rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP).
Additionally, an individual officer was beaten with an axe. Civilians were also hurt, with one individual in critical condition. A total of five people suffered injuries. Fadnavis condemned the violence directed against officers, stating it would not be tolerated and strict action would be taken.
Allegations of Planned Conspiracies

Fadnavis stated that it appeared to officials this violence was organized. He claimed that a small number of homes and shops were attacked in an organized fashion. He said, “This violent incident and riots seem pre-planned,” and also mentioned that the mob was armed and had congregated.
Political Reactions
The incident has elicited varied responses from political leaders. Ambadas Danve, the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, held Fadnavis and his government accountable for the violence. Asserting that the ruling party was trying to disrupt communal harmony in the state.
Danve said, “I am clearly saying that the violence in Nagpur is due to the Maharashtra government and state CM Devendra Fadnavis, who also runs the home department.”
Congress MLA Vijay Waddetiwar attacked the state government’s stand on the Aurangzeb issue. He asked who benefits from raising such issues and demanded a ban on Telangana BJP leader T Raja in Maharashtra to prevent trouble from arising.
Waddetiwar further asked why, despite being in power at both state and centre, the government is making an issue over Aurangzeb.
Appeals for Peace
In the wake of the violence, authorities and political figures have urged the public to maintain peace and harmony. The Nagpur Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule charges that social media was used to stir up trouble. Refereed the opposing side not to politicize the matter. He also asked all communities to keep the peace and harmony.
Current Scenario
As of Tuesday afternoon, the situation in Nagpur remains tense but under control. A curfew still remains in effect in Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Tehsil, Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shanti Nagar, Sakkardara, Nandanvan, Imambada, Yashodhara Nagar, and Kapil Nagar police station limits.
