Actor-politician Prakash Raj has openly slammed Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan for his remarks on Hindi and its acceptance in non-Hindi-speaking states.
Pawan Kalyan’s Controversial Statement Kalyan questioned what Tamil Nadu politicians had against Hindi, while they allowed dubbing films from Tamil to Hindi for money.
Pawan Kalyan’s Statement
“They want money from Bollywood but Hindi is imposed on them—what kind of logic is that?” Kalyan said. Prakash Raj’s Comments Raj commented on Kalyan’s remarks on his social media pages, disagreeing with this stance.
According to him, the state’s identity, including the cultural representation of the regional language, is important. Raj mentioned, “What is it with your demands of Hindi to be imposed on us? It is not hating one language against another; rather it concerns self-respect in preserving our mother tongue and thus our cultural identity.”
AIADMK’s Stand

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) responded to Kalyan’s remarks. AIADMK is Tamil’s main opposition party. It’s national spokesperson Kovai Sathyan condemned the Dravida Munnetra and Pawan Kalyan’s standpoint.
Sathyan stated that the ruling DMK responded to the NEP as it saw the NEP in a political context. Hence, making Kalyan simplify the business interests and that Tamil Nadu built culture into one amalgam.
Sathyan said that a significant reason why the NEP was opposed in the state was that there were apprehensions. Especially regarding Hindi being introduced indirectly and overshadowing regional languages.
VHP’s Support for Kalyan
VHP national spokesperson Vinod Bansal asserted the importance of national symbols and languages. According to him, Tamil Nadu leaders opposed Hindi only because they projected an agenda meant to divide the country along regional lines.
He seemed confident that people in Tamil Nadu would Jettison such divisive politics.
The Language Debate
However, this exchange between Kalyan and Raj puts into perspective the debate that is always contentious regarding language policies in India.
The NEP’s three-language formula has caused much violence between the states of India. The impact on Tamil Nadu has been exceptional as they have resisted Hindi for decades. The continued confusion is in the balance. Between any attempt to national unity while simultaneously trying to preserve regional linguistic and cultural heritage.
