In an almost unbelievable weather phenomenon, Delhi has recorded the highest rainfall in December after 15 years. The India Meteorological Department reported that Delhi received a total of 42.8 mm of rainfall this month, exceeding the previous records.
Beginning early Thursday and panning out till Friday, the spell of rain has immersed the entire National Capital Region in deep water and caused traffic snarls.
Temperature Plunge and Air Quality Concerns
The downpour has sent temperatures plunging, and Delhi’s maximum temperature hovered at 14.6°C, registering the lowest December maximum in the last five years.
The rapid fall in temperature has accentuated the winter chill for residents of Delhi. Further, the city’s air quality remains a cause for concern, with the Air Quality Index, or AQI, hovering in the very poor category, despite the rains.
IMD’s Analysis and Forecast
The IMD has ascribed this unusual weather to an active western disturbance penetrating the region. It would have enabled heavy rain to continue in Delhi and other nearby areas.
An orange alert has been put into place for Himachal Pradesh with a forecast of heavy snowfall along with severe cold wave conditions over the next two days.
Impact on Himachal Pradesh

The IMD has forecast light to moderate snowfall with a few heavy spells over several parts of the high and adjoining mid-hills of Himachal Pradesh from the afternoon of 27 December to the morning of 29 December.
During this time, various tourist locations, for example, Shimla, will face snowfall. The maximum temperature in the state will drop by 6-8°C, putting it under mild cold to very cold extremes.
Public Advisory and Precautions
As Authorities have asked residents and travelers in Delhi and Himachal Pradesh to be careful during the period. In Delhi, travel is suggested to be planned in consideration of the waterlogged roads and resultant congestion.
The public in Himachal Pradesh has been advised to avoid high-altitude areas during heavy snowfall and to act following local advisories in the interests of safety.
Historical Context and Future Outlook
Normally December is one of the driest months for Delhi, and rain is being particularly noticed this year. The last such instance was recorded in December of 2009. The all-time highest December rain occurred during 1884 with 134.4 mm.
The IMD will keep a keen watch on the weather conditions and keep issuing subsequent updates as the situation changes.
These weather events in Delhi and Himachal Pradesh reaffirm the capricious nature of the region’s climate. Residents and cognizant authorities should remain alert and take precautions instead of the unusual weather conditions.
