‘Treated Like a Terrorist’: BJP’s CT Ravi Slams Congress After Bail in Defamation Case

Bengaluru: A Member of Legislative Council of the Bharatiya Janata Party, C.T. Ravi, secured interim bail from the Karnataka High Court Friday after having been arrested over alleged derogatory remarks against Karnataka minister Laxmi Hebbalkar.

The arrest and subsequent granting of bail have opened up heated political discussions in the state.

Arrest and Allegations

On Thursday evening, C.T. Ravi was arrested in Belagavi during the Karnataka Legislative Council’s Winter Session. The arrest was made after Laxmi Hebbalkar, the minister for Women and Child Development of Karnataka, lodged a complaint alleging that Ravi made derogatory statements towards her in the course of the Assembly.

The complaint lent grounds for a First Information Report under the provisions of Sexual Harassment and offending the modesty of a woman.

Judicial Proceedings and Bail

On Friday, Justice M.G. Uma of the Karnataka High Court issued interim orders securing Ravi’s release. The High Court’s ruling ensured that Ravi would no longer be detained pending parliamentary proceedings; he was taken at that time to Bengaluru to be produced before the Court for elected representatives.

Ravi’s Post-Release Response

On his release, Ravi expressed deep dissatisfaction over his arrest, saying, “They treated me like a terrorist.” He attacked the state government as a whole and claimed that the measures against him were excessive and politically motivated.

He said that he had not had a proper meal since his arrest, revealing the physical and emotional impact it had had on him.

Political Responses

Reactions to the arrest and subsequent release of C.T. Ravi has varied across different political parties.

He has accused the Congress-led Siddaramaiah government of acting with dictatorship, vowing that the dictatorship shall not last awkwardly. Former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, too, stepped in, alleging a police raid in the state, stating that the government was using laws for furthering its political vendettas.

Background on C.T. Ravi

C.T. Ravi is a senior BJP leader in Karnataka known for his outspoken actions in state politics. He has been the Minister for Tourism and Kannada Language in the Karnataka government.

Ravi has represented Chikmagalur assembly constituency for four terms and has been associated with many positions in the BJP, including the post of State General Secretary. His political standing is entwined with respect and controversies, sometimes based on communal remarks arising out of political activity related to the Hindutva movement in coastal Karnataka.

Implications of the Incident Going Forward

The controversy has shown heightened political tensions within the state because of allegations of misuse of power and suppression of dissenting voices.

The case of alleged derogatory remarks will go through due process and will almost certainly carry on for quite some time, with the High Court granting interim bail as a temporary release for Ravi.

The issue prominently raised concerns regarding basic civil liberties like freedom of expression, conduct of public representatives, and redress under the legislative framework.

How both the BJP and the Congress will seize the political opportunism in the matter will be interesting in the backdrop of elections approaching and changing matrices of state politics.
